Baggage Surprise

The Arizona Star has a question from a reader concerning overweight luggage.

It seems the reader flew from Canada to Mexico, with a stopover in Cancun on the way to Acapulco. The unpleasant surprise is that the international luggage allowance was 70 pounds each bag, which the traveler met, but the domestic weight limit was 44 pounds per bag. The traveling reader was charged $350 for the excess weight for the domestic segment of the trip. He should have been charged that amount each way, but it was overlooked on his flight to Acapulco; it was caught only on his flight back. Talk about an unpleasant surprise. The one-way excess baggage charge exceeded the price of his round trip ticket, by the way.

If you are flying internationally, but make stops in the foreign country, especially if you change to a local airline, check your carrier's Web site for luggage limitations.
