Finding cheap fares when traveling overseas

Today's Wall Street Journal has an article on traveling in foreign countries at lower fares than we Americans find on our Web sites (such as Expedia or our American airlines).

Foreign discount carriers generally are not listed on America-based Web sites; the WSJ recommends using A-Z World Airports as a backdoor to cheap fairs. Look for airports serving the cities you are traveling between, then go to the airport Web sites and find the carrriers serving the cities. An example is the fare for a round trip flight between Budapest and Istanbul. Connecticut-based kayak.com showed a low fare of $260, with other sites clocking in at a high of $350; Hungary's national airline Malev has a round trip fare of $138, found through the list of carriers serving Budapest.

In addition to checking local carrier's Web sites, the Journal suggests opodo.com (which is owned by a consortium of European airlines), Ryanair (an Ireland-based discount carrier), easyJet, Air Berlin, and Virgin Express for European discount fares, and zuji.com (covering Asian Pacific), Air Asia, Jetstar, and Tiger Airways serving Asia. For the Middle East, the Journal suggests Air Arabia, and SpiceJet for travels within India. All of these Web sites had options for pages in English.
