More on dengue fever

MDTravelHealth.com has a lengthy page on travel to Martinique at

http://www.mdtravelhealth.com/destinations/mamerica_carib/martinique.html

with this paragraph:

"An outbreak of dengue fever was reported in July 2005, resulting in more than 6000 suspected cases as of late September. The areas most affected were centrally located (Fort de France, Lamentin, Saint-Joseph, and Schoelcher), as well as certain localities in the south (Riviere Pilote, Marin, and Francois) and north (Trinite and Basse Pointe). In Martinique, small outbreaks of dengue fever usually occur each year in the early summer. Dengue fever is a flu-like illness which may be complicated by hemorrhage or shock. The disease is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, which bite primarily in the daytime and favor densely populated areas, though they also inhabit rural environments. No vaccine is available at this time. Insect protection measures are advised, as below."

The page for Guadeloupe is at

http://www.mdtravelhealth.com/destinations/mamerica_carib/guadeloupe.html

and contains the following paragraph:

"An outbreak of dengue fever was reported in July 2005, resulting in 183 confirmed cases as of August 24. The areas most affected were in the south of Basse-Terre and on St. Martin island. The outbreak also spread into Basse-Terre, Gourbeyre, Saint-Claude and Baillif and, to a lesser degree, into northern Basse Terre (Pointe Noire) and Grande Terre (Abymes, Gosier, Sainte-Anne, Morne l'eau). In Guadeloupe, small outbreaks of dengue fever usually occur each year in the early summer. Dengue fever is a flu-like illness which may be complicated by hemorrhage or shock. The disease is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, which bite primarily in the daytime and favor densely populated areas, though they also inhabit rural environments. No vaccine is available at this time. Insect protection measures are advised, as outlined below."

Both pages contain suggestions for health maintenance specifically for each island, although there is considerable overlap. There are short paragraphs on the quality and location of medical facilities for Martinique and Guadeloupe. Louise had a severe eye infection during one trip to Guadeloupe, and her description of her care is at
