Passports charged excess fees

According to several news reports, including this one on MSNBC, the State Department appears to have knowingly overcharged on passport fees during the crush to get passports in accordance with the new laws requiring a passport for returning to the States from the Caribbean.

The government requires US citizens to present a passport for re-entry for security reasons (see the earlier article), and our executive branch overcharged people for them. Congress is now wanting to know what happened to that money, perhaps a hundred million dollars annually. The State Department has refused to comment, as the study establishing excessive fees has no yet been officially released.

If you have gotten or renewd a passport in the last five years, you may want to follow this matter with some interest. You may be due a refund.
