The end of free alcohol on international flights

The Wall Street Journal reports on January 17, 2006, that "the last remaining US carrier to give out free booze in international coach class" will charge for drinks on Asian-Pacific flights. Northwest Airlines will still provide free alcoholic beverages on its other international flights.

The WSJ also reports that the amount of alcohol carried, and its quality, will be lessened as well. In addition to lowering costs, airlines, according to the article, are trying to curb drink-related misbehavior. The paper provides a chart of airlines and their rules on page D5. It also mentions cut backs at the airline clubs, where even premium fare customers are being limited in the amount of alcohol served.
