"Secure" ID now required for Americans returning from travel in the Western Hemisphere

The US State Department has information at New Requirements for Travelers concerning implementation of the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004. Travelers to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada must have a "secure form of ID." So far, only a passport meets this requirement. Read that page for more information, including links to a FAQ and Travel Notice.

Note that this change applies to American citizens returning to the United States from countries within the Western Hemisphere. It is not a requirement for travel to other countries in the Western Hemisphere; passport requirements for entry into other countries is governed by their own laws.
