The past is not prologue.

Bruce Schneier has a monthly commentary on his security blog. Today's artcle is called "Last Week's Terrorism Arrests." If you don't know who he is, Mr. Schneier is a security consultant specializing in cryptography, but most security concerns spill over from area to another.

In "Last Week's Terrorism Arrests" Mr. Schneier makes a point he makes often. Last week's attempts at terrorism were not something we were prepared for:

None of the airplane security measures implemented because of 9/11 -- no-fly lists, secondary screening, prohibitions against pocket knives and corkscrews -- had anything to do with last week's arrests. And they wouldn't have prevented the planned attacks, had the terrorists not been arrested. A national ID card wouldn't have made a difference, either.

In other words, planning for the last mode of attack is ineffective. What seems to have worked is gumshoe detective work and intelligence analysis. Mr. Schneier's article is worth reading, and it's in a page filled with all sorts of information you may find helpful.
