Here's a story about a guy who had an inexpensive camera stolen from his checked baggage. Through amazing (or incredibly obssessive) perserverance, he finds out who stole it (read the story), the guy is arrested, prosecuted, and enters a pre-trial intervention program. It's a Delta Airlines baggage handler. He asks Delta for a refund of his ticket price, and gets stonewalled. No refund will be offered, since he made his trip (which I think is reasonable).
Our hero found the camera because it was auctioned on eBay, he tracked down the sympathetic buyer, who provided our hero with the seller's contact information. A quick search on eBay turned up other auctions by this person of various electronic equipment. It is reported that Delta fired the guy, but I don't see confirmation of that in the story.
The starter's pistol ruse is suggested in the comments to the story. As I've mentioned here before, checked baggage with firearms is permissible. If you are checking valuables in your baggage, consider putting a starter pistol in that bag and declaring it as a firearm. See that earlier post for more information on how to pack the pistol. Starter pistols are probably legal in all states, but I have no information on what happens when you land in foreign countries with a bag containing a declared firearm that's a starter pistol. If you try it, let me know.
