TSA loosens prohibitions on carryon items

With a URL that is a schizophrenic as the TSA (http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm), the TSA has announced that some formerly prohibited items are now permitted.

Gel-filled bras "and similar prosthetics" are now allowed, along with solid items such as lipstick and lipbalm, small amounts for baby formula if accompanied by the baby, saline solution, eye care products, and KY jelly (all the aforementioned in quantities of less than four ounces).

So according to the chart, bubble bath balls and oils are prohibited from carryon, but cigar cutters are allowed. All creams, ointments, and lotions are banned, but corkscrews, knitting needles, and eyelash curlers are allowed in carryon. It's an interesting chart of permitted/prohibited, reflecting the last alleged terrorist plot, but not the one before last.

The TSA page has the standard disclaimer that the list is neither exhaustive nor exclusive. The people on the job have the final say.

Finally, drop by Bruce Scheier's latest essay, "What the Terrorists Want" for an interesting discussion of just what terrorism is and why governments are falling into the trap.

Then stop by Wondermark for David Malki's cartoon.

Have a safe trip. Have a fun trip.
