At the morning breakfast, he chatted with a group of fellow attendees, all of whom introduced themselves and talked about their work. After the breakfast, Mr. Hasbrouck was asked to leave. He was told by the event representative that one of the speakers did not feel comfortable giving a presentation that contained sensitive information when there was an author in the audience. Mr. Hasbrouck appears to have been told the organization would refund his registration fee ($1,795), but his travel and lodging expenses were left hanging. Asking for those to be reimbursed seems fair, since he made the trip for the symposium.

[http://www.treehugger.com/files/2007/11/pack_less_fly_green.php|TreeHugger] has some information on ~TerraPass, which I thought I\'d pass on, as it has some interesting tips on cutting down on carbon dioxide emissions. One person, of course, isn\'t going to save the planet, but we can each pitch in.

First off, taking the train seems to be the most efficient way to travel, but it takes days and doesn\'t go where **I** want to go (something about laying rails across deep ocean and boats finding rails impassable).

The most useful piece of advice from ~TerraPass is to fly direct - if you save money by using intermediate stops, you are increasing the number of take-offs and landings. Energy consumption for planes in greatly increased when taking off and landing, so fly non-stop whenever possible.

According to several news reports, including this one on [http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21597069/|MSNBC], the State Department appears to have knowingly overcharged on passport fees during the crush to get passports in accordance with the new laws requiring a passport for returning to the States from the Caribbean.

The government requires US citizens to present a passport for re-entry for security reasons ([WesternHemisphereTravelInitiative|see the earlier article]), and our executive branch overcharged people for them. Congress is now wanting to know what happened to that money, perhaps a hundred million dollars annually. The State Department has refused to comment, as the study establishing excessive fees has no yet been officially released.

If you have gotten or renewd a passport in the last five years, you may want to follow this matter with some interest. You may be due a refund.
