TreeHugger has some information on TerraPass, which I thought I'd pass on, as it has some interesting tips on cutting down on carbon dioxide emissions. One person, of course, isn't going to save the planet, but we can each pitch in.
First off, taking the train seems to be the most efficient way to travel, but it takes days and doesn't go where I want to go (something about laying rails across deep ocean and boats finding rails impassable).
The most useful piece of advice from TerraPass is to fly direct - if you save money by using intermediate stops, you are increasing the number of take-offs and landings. Energy consumption for planes in greatly increased when taking off and landing, so fly non-stop whenever possible.
Less useful tips include packing lighter and flying economy (business and first class have more leg room, hence fewer seats - the more seats per plane, but more efficient it is to fly passengers).
TerraPass is a site that sells carbon offsets for all those people guilty about generating carbon dioxide. The site lets you calculate your car's emissions for guilt trips - oops, sorry, business trips and fun trips - and sells you offsets. You can also buy appropriate offsets for travel by whatever means you are using, along with fighting global warming in your dorm room, home, or office. If you have friends visiting, you can even give the gift of offsets.
Or, you can buy chocolate to offset the guilt. The choice is yours.
